Bookmark Ball 2016 Auction and Raffles

In celebration of John J. Enneking’s life and career, this year’s Bookmark Ball on Saturday, October 22nd, will feature a live auction of 7 Enneking giclee reproductions.  Giclee is a French word meaning “to spray ink,” and is pronounced “zhee clay”.   A giclée print is a reproduction of an original work of art using a highly specialized inkjet printer.

Tickets for the Bookmark Ball are $30 in advance, and a suggested $35 at the door.   All proceeds from the 2016 Bookmark Ball benefits the Friends’ Art Fund, which covers musical arts programs such as the Friends’ summer concert series and other performances throughout the year at the branch library.  These performances are open to the public of all ages and are free admission.

2016 Bookmark Ball Tickets

Over the years, the Friends of the Hyde Park Branch Library have held its biggest fundraiser in commemoration of different events in the history of our favorite branch library. Our last ball was our Back to Basic Bookmark Ball highlighting a challenge within our group to expend the least amount of funds to gain the most funds for future programming at the Hyde Park Branch Library. The Hyde Park community very generously supported us in that event through nearly 5 years of programming!

This fall the Friends will be celebrating the acquisition of Isaac Caliga’s portrait of American Impressionist John J. Enneking, Hyde Park’s artist and adopted son. In addition to our usual raffles and quilt display, the John J. Enneking Centennial Bookmark Ball commemorates the 100th anniversary of his death and celebrates his life and career with a live auction of 5 framed Enneking painting reproductions. These will be displayed at the branch library in the weeks prior to our ball.

Tickets for the event are $30 (tickets held at the door), but will be $35 on the day of the ball. Advance purchases can be made using the Paypal buttons below, or by sending a check made payable to the “Friends of the Hyde Park Branch Library”, to 35 Harvard Avenue, Hyde Park, MA, 02136.

The Hyde Park community comprises members offering different services.  Three library Friends have stepped forward to offer educational, fitness, and research help in our silent auction:

Do you know a child who might need tutoring?  Christine Mandell of West Roxbury is a math tutor as well as a certified reading specialist and violin teacher of the Suzuki method.  The winning bidder will have a choice of:

• 3 60-minute reading sessions for a child aged 4+ reading below grade 2 level; OR
• 3 45-minute math sessions for a child aged 5-7 in grade K or 1 who is below grade level; OR
• 3 30-minute violin sessions for a child aged 9+ or for an absolute beginner adult.

To keep the whole family fit and healthy, the Hyde Park YMCA is offering a 3-month membership.  This family membership gives full access to the Y’s newly renovated facility on River Street near Logan Square.  This offering is ITEM #2.  [Value: $265/Reserve: $50]

A popular question these days is, “Who do you think you are?”  Hyde Park resident Alice Kane is a professional genealogist and is offering 6 hours of genealogical research to help the winning bidder find out.  While a fully complete genealogical project is not guaranteed, the time available for bid is appropriate for tracing 2-3 generations of one family or for answering a specific question about an individual or single family.  Please consult the description HERE for full terms and information about Alice’s services before bidding.  This offering is ITEM #3.  [Value: $300/Reserve: $150]

It’s the start of a new season, Red Sox Nation!  Generous Friends are donating 2 silent auction items to support our team:

Wear your pride with this Red Sox Jersey in Home White from Majestic Athletic featuring Pedroia’s #15.  The jersey is Adult size M, and is accompanied by an MLB-licensed Red Sox cap featuring the red socks emblem.  The jersey and cap are Item #5. [Value: $120/Reserve: $25]

Cheer our boys to victory in person with a pair of tickets to Fenway Park’s Grandstand!  Located in section 19, a lucky fan will have a great view of the field from between homeplate and first base.  It will be winner’s choice of Saturdays:  May 7, 1:05pm vs. the Twins, OR September 3, 7:10pm vs. the Rangers.  The pair of tickets is Item #8. Bookmark Ball: Silent Auction

This year’s Bookmark Ball will feature a silent auction offering an eclectic line up of items and services. The auction will be run between 8:00pm and 10:00pm, and bidders may bid in person or by absentee bid forms. Winning bidders need not be present, and will be notified within 48 hours of the auction’s close if they are not attending the Ball.

All interested bidders must register their contact information to participate in the auction. On registration, every bidder will be assigned a unique Bidder Number. Each bid must match the bid increment for each item–bids not following the bid increment will be disallowed. Absentee bids will be updated on bid sheets at regular intervals throughout the evening.

Pre-event absentee bidder registration forms will be available at the branch library during the week BEFORE the Ball (April 25-30). To register via email, please send your contact information (name, address, telephone, and email), a list of the items to be bid on,and minimum/maximum bids for each item to .  A confirmation email will be sent with a unique Bidder Number; in case of duplicate minimum and maximum bids on a particular item by an absentee bidder, the time and date stamp of the registration email will determine priority.

A quick round up of some auction items (more details will be posted on this blog before the Ball) include Red Sox items, research and tutoring services, and artistic works which will be split 50/50 between the artist and the Friends. All items will have a reserve or minimum bid requirement.

Payment for successful bids may be by check made out to “Friends of the Hyde Park Branch Library”, or in cash if attending the Ball. All auction items can be picked up from the branch library at time of payment, unless alternate arrangements are made.
