2016 Bookmark Ball Tickets

Back to Basics Bookmark Ball, April 30, 2011Over the years, the Friends of the Hyde Park Branch Library have held its biggest fundraiser in commemoration of different events in the history of our favorite branch library. Our last ball was our Back to Basic Bookmark Ball highlighting a challenge within our group to expend the least amount of funds to gain the most funds for future programming at the Hyde Park Branch Library. The Hyde Park community very generously supported us in that event through nearly 5 years of programming!

This fall the Friends will be celebrating the acquisition of Isaac Caliga’s portrait of American Impressionist John J. Enneking, Hyde Park’s artist and adopted son. In addition to our usual raffles and quilt display, the John J. Enneking Centennial Bookmark Ball commemorates the 100th anniversary of his death and celebrates his life and career with a live auction of 5 framed Enneking painting reproductions. These will be displayed at the branch library in the weeks prior to our ball.

Tickets for the event are $30 (tickets held at the door), but will be $35 on the day of the ball. Advance purchases can be made using the Paypal buttons below, or by sending a check made payable to the “Friends of the Hyde Park Branch Library”, to 35 Harvard Avenue, Hyde Park, MA, 02136.

Support the Friends with your donation (using increments of $5) anytime with the convenient Paypal button below.

Start November with New Books and DVD’s!

The Friends of the Hyde Park Branch will hold its Fall book sale on Friday and Saturday, November 2-3, from 10-3.  Members of the Friends get the best selection – and tasty treats as well! – at the preview reception on November 1 from 6-7:30.  If it has expired, you can renew your membership ($10 for basic level) at the door.  And bring a friend or neighbor who would like to join.

Do you have books in good, saleable condition that you would like to donate?  If so, please prescreen them at home and put into your recycling any books with the following problems: 1) torn bindings, covers, pages; 2) stains or warping from beverage spills; 3) mildew odors; 4) outdated computer and technical manuals and textbooks.  Leave donated books on the bench in the lobby near the elevator.

Become a more active member!  We welcome volunteers during the week before the sale to sort and arrange the books, and on the sale days to assist us with a variety of tasks.  It is a wonderful opportunity to help the library (proceeds from all Friends fundraisers support programming at the branch) and to meet fellow book-lovers.  If you can help, leave your contact information (name, phone, email) at the circulation desk (617.361.2524) or at friendshplibrary@yahoo.com.

HP Sesquicentennial Lecture

The Hyde Park Sesquicentennial Committee will present its first event Saturday April 28, 2012, 12pm, in the branch library’s historic Weld Hall.  In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Hyde Park’s 1912 annexation by the city of Boston, local historian Anthony Sammarco (author of Hyde Park: Then and Now — Arcadia Press, 2011) will give an illustrated talk on Hyde Park.  A centennial cake and refreshments will be offered following the presentation.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Hyde Park Branch Library and is supported by a grant from the Blue Hills Bank Charitable Foundation.  The Hyde Park Sesquicentennial Committee is a joint project of the Hyde Park Historical Society, the Friends of the Hyde Park Branch Library, and the Hyde Park Branch of the Boston Public Library.

Hyde Park Then and Now, Again!
